What is the SAFE KIDS' Helmet Bank?

Safe Kids Sonoma County

SAFE KIDS Sonoma County wants to help kids stay safe while bicycling. SAFE KIDS is promoting the use of bike helmets.  Bicycle helmets can save the life of a child.  Properly fitted helmets have been shown to reduce the risk of death or head injury by over 80%.  A limited number of bike helmets will be awarded free of charge to qualified groups and organizations in Sonoma County.

Who can receive free helmets?

Non-profit organizations serving low-income children of Sonoma County are eligible to apply to receive free helmets.  SAFE KIDS has provided helmets to schools, police departments, YMCAs, health clinics, etc.  To apply for and receive these free helmets, organizations are required to:

  • Learn to fit bike helmets properly
  • Identify low-income children under age 18
  • Provide volunteers to help fit each helmet recipient
  • Provide appropriate safety messages with each helmet
  • Complete a brief evaluation within 30 days of the event
